Drug, Alcohol, Tobacco & Education Adviser.

 Salary: c£31,600 per annum pro rata.

Location:  Guernsey, Channel Islands.

Contract/Hours: Fixed Term Contract – Term Time Only, 28 hours per week until 31st December 2026. Candidates looking for additional hours can be considered.

A bit about the role  

​Action for Children Guernsey provides a broad range of unique and innovative services for young people aged 13 to 25 years old who are experiencing difficulties in relation to accommodation, employment and seeks to specifically address drug and alcohol issues preventatively, directly and by signposting on to more specialist services.

We are looking for a Drug, Alcohol and Tobacco Education advisor to work closely with primary and secondary schools in the Bailiwick to deliver education to Children and Young people in the Islands schools and other community settings. In total you will teach a Bailiwick child 24 times during their education journey, working with teaching staff and other stakeholders to find creative and educative ways to make sure young people are informed of the risks of substance use.

Specifically, the Drug, Alcohol and Tobacco Education advisor will provide peer-led and adult-led education in schools within whole-school healthy lifestyle approaches.

How you'll help to create brighter futures 

  • Being responsible for planning, delivering, and evaluating appropriate evidence-based education programmes to all 10–18-year-olds with Bailiwick schools leading to the prevention of young people using substances.
  • Leading and developing new lessons, intervention, and initiatives in line with emerging evidence, best practice guidelines and changes in legislation
  • Providing signposting information about the help and advice available to young people who need support with substance use including tobacco and vaping.
  • Working with the PSHCE Adviser and Secondary Schools to develop and co-deliver programmes which respond to the needs of young people around the topics or drugs, alcohol, tobacco, and vaping.
  • Providing relevant advice, guidance, and training on healthy living in children aged 10 to 18 within the Bailiwick of Guernsey, and on drug, alcohol, tobacco, and vaping education, to people with a remit for improving the health and wellbeing of children and young people.
  • Supporting young people in informal and community settings on drug, alcohol, and nicotine by providing information, advice and guidance sessions for individuals and small groups.
  • Keeping abreast of the latest research in this area to make sure the service is making the best possible impact to the outcomes of Children & Young People.

 Let's talk about you. 

  • Degree or recognised qualification in a related area (e.g., Youth Work, Social Car, Public Health, Teaching, Nursing, Psychology).
  • Experience of working effectively with young people (from 10 – 18 years) in groups and individually, including developing a positive rapport with children aged 10-18.
  • Demonstrable skills to develop effective and productive relationships with schools and agencies.
  • Planning, delivering, and evaluating educational / school-based initiatives and reflect objectively on own practice.
  • Knowledge of health improvement or public health related issues, specifically drugs, alcohol, and tobacco is desirable.
  • Driving Licence holder and car owner (or meet the mobility requirements of the role through other reasonable and suitable means).
  • Residency permit to work in Guernsey.
