Why Action for Children?

We are one of the UK's largest children's charities – you may have seen us featured in a well-known Christmas TV advert for 2022. One way we support young people is by offering nurturing environments in small residential homes, located in local communities. You could soon be a valued member of our team at Brumby House in Ryton.

At Action for Children, we pride ourselves in being collaborative and inclusive. Are you passionate about changing the lives of children and young people to give them the best possible future?

A bit about the role.

Do you have a strong background in children's residential care? Are you focused and passionate about changing the lives of children and young people for the better? We have a unique opportunity for experienced therapeutic residential staff to join our team in the newly developed children's homes in the Northeast for children and young people who are looked after. These are exciting, challenging and rewarding roles with the opportunity to make a huge personal impact.

One of the great things about the job is sharing your skills, passions, and interests with young people. From being a whizz on the PlayStation, to creating origami animals and exploring nature, you can inspire children in so many ways. Children will be able to gain a sense of their own self, and discover their worth as individuals, thanks to the time spent with you.

This is an innovative and exciting opportunity to make a difference!

How you'll help to create brighter futures.

As a Therapeutic Residential Worker, you will work with a wide range of professionals to ensure that the children and young people you support develop to their full potential. We will actively support you in your role and provide you with regular supervision / APR process and specialist training, from our newly developed Professional Development Centre.

  • Providing high quality services that support the needs of the children and young people,
  • Building excellent relationships with young people, their families and other care professionals.
  • Being an advocate for the wellbeing of the young people.
  • Working within a Therapeutic model of care that has been specifically designed to support staff in providing trauma-informed, compassionate care for young people in residential care.

Let's talk about you.

We are looking for someone who shares our passion for creating brighter futures. You'll contribute to our vision of ensuring safe and happy childhoods. To achieve that real change to vulnerable children, young people and families, there'll be certain qualities that you will have:

  • QCF 3 diploma for children and Young People's workforce social care pathway or equivalent is desirable, or the willingness to work towards this.
  • A positive approach, providing a fun environment for all the children in our care.
  • A positive and confident approach to engaging with children and young people.
  • A flexible approach to working hours (service is open 24/7)
  • A real compassionate and positive attitude is a MUST.

Good to know.

Diversity, equality and inclusion

At Action for Children, we're dedicated to building a diverse, inclusive and authentic workplace by actively encouraging applications from Black, Asian & Minority Ethnic candidates and people with disabilities, as they are under-represented within Action for Children. We want to take deliberate and meaningful action to ensure fair opportunity to all groups in our communities and for AFC.

We're also encouraging more male applicants for our Children's Services roles, too.

Don't meet every single requirement? If you're excited about this role but your experience doesn't align perfectly with the job description, we'd love you to apply anyway. You might just be the perfect person for this role, or another role within the Action for Children family.
