Public Affairs Manager (5252)

London, City of London
Circa £38,000 + Inner London Weighting (£3333)
35 Hours – Full-Time

Speaking up and making life better for children, young people and their families.

The role

Action for Children's vision is for every child and young person in the country to have a safe and happy childhood. But for hundreds of thousands of children in the UK, childhood hurts. Vulnerable children are being ignored, they are left without support to face abuse and neglect, domestic violence, deprivation, and poor mental health.

We are looking for an experienced, passionate, and ambitious Public Affairs Manager to join our high performing team so we can fix this together.   This exciting role is Action for Children's expert and lead adviser for Westminster Government (UK-wide) public affairs and political influencing. The role manages and oversees key political relationships, implements our influencing priorities, ensures the work of the Policy and Campaigns Department is politically astute, and supports children and young people to have a voice in Parliament.

During Covid times, we support agile / homeworking with the expectation to progress back into our office base in WC2B 5DG, when we can, with continued flexibility and a mix of home and office working.

You will make a difference by:

-Leading the development of political influencing activity to deliver Action for Children's priorities to improve the lives of disadvantaged children, setting annual objectives and targets within a clear framework for evaluation.

-Leading and deliver Action for Children's UK public affairs strategy, including through political relationship building, preparing political briefings, co-ordinating our responses to Parliamentary inquiries and managing our election/party conference activity, to meet our influencing priorities.

-Representing Action for Children to external audiences, including speaking at Parliamentary events, professional networks, conferences and other influential forums, as Action for Children's lead and expert adviser at Westminster.

-Providing professional support to the Campaigns, Advocacy and Policy Advisors in Scotland and Northern Ireland to deliver Action for Children's influencing priorities in each nation, including research, policy development, and public affairs and campaigning. Manage the public affairs intern based in London.

You will need:

-Education to a degree level OR proven work experience related to this field.

-Proven influencing skills, including the ability to analyse and interpret complex information and frame to resonate with senior political audiences.

-Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

-Excellent interpersonal skills to influence activity across departments, collaborate with senior colleagues, other organisations and to work effectively in a team. This includes having good analytical skills to make and communicate strategic risk-based decisions within a large complex organisation.

-Excellent organisation and planning skills to respond quickly but professionally to the demands of the fast moving political, policy and media agendas.
