Contract/Hours: Permanent, Full time (37 hours)

About the Role:

West Lothian Housing Support Service is an outreach Housing Support provision based in Livingston. The service offers support to young people aged 16-26 years who are homeless, at risk of homelessness or are undergoing a housing transition with which they need support. The aim of the service is to assist young people to develop the skills to independently, and responsibly manage their own tenancy. In addition, we can offer support to 15-year olds for up to 2 hours a week, to prepare them to become more independent and develop skills which would help them sustain their current and future placement. We also offer conflict resolution and mediation support if they wish to continue to stay in their current living arrangements. 

The service offers a range of practical skills including budgeting, good door keeping and key life skills. Alongside the development of practical tenancy management skills workers develop a supportive, nurturing relationship with young people with the aim of improving their emotional well-being, confidence, and independence.  We are looking for a Housing Support Practitioner who will be responsible for key working duties including engagement with service users, co-ordinating support and maintaining written records. You will be required to complete initial and ongoing assessments.  Our office is based in Livingston EH54 8PT, and we cover service users in the whole of West Lothian.  The working hours of this role cover 9am – 9pm on a needs led basis and our core days generally cover Mon- Fri, but we require some flexibility to accommodate support to service users which may include occasional evenings and weekends.

During Covid times, we support agile / home working with a requirement to be in the office on an ad hoc basis.  Our expectation is to return to the office on a full-time basis when the guidelines allow.

 

As a Housing Support Practitioner, you'll be:

  • Developing productive professional relationships with the young people we support.
  • Undertaking assessment and action planning in partnership with Young People.
  • Achieving the highest standards of safeguarding, whether through direct care provision or support activities to the children and young peoplewho come into contact with our services, or by appropriately reporting concerns about any child or young.
  • Promoting Equality and Diversity strategy locally including linking with local equality and diversity frameworks to ensure promotion of best practice and to inform and develop appropriate action.

 

What You'll Bring:

Our job description for the Housing Support Practitioner outlines the requirements of the role but the ‘must-haves' are:

  • Minimum SVQ3 in social care/equivalent qualification for housing support service or willing to work towards qualification.
  • Registered with SSSC or equivalent/ willing to work towards registration.
  • Experienced in a social care setting and an understanding of the issues young adults experience who are homeless.
  • Experienced in safeguarding and an understanding of risk management.
  • Knowledge of mental health issues experienced by young people.
  • Ability to engage with young people and build positive relationships.
  • Knowledge and experience of multi-agency working.
  • Suitable means of transport to effectively carry out the duties of the role with appropriate business use vehicle insurance required.
